While I agree that Apple offers comparable (or better) gear at the mid to high end they still suck considerably at the entry level. My in-laws are in need of a new computer and I was trying to convince them (my MIL mostly) to get a Mac instead of a Dell, HP, whatever. I found it impossible to justify $1100 for a Macbook when they saw ads in the paper for $600 windows laptops. Not crappy laptops either. Comparable CPUs, hard drive space etc. Even included twice as much memory. Considering all they do with a computer is browse the web, check stocks etc, it’s VERY hard to make that $500 price difference reasonable.

You are very correct about the entry level Mac (desktop or laptop). It simply doesn’t exist. Yes, there’s the Mac Mini, but that doesn’t compare favorably to a similarly priced Dell or HP. Here’s an article that says the same thing you’re saying: http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2008/08/the_price_difference_between_macs_and_pcs_wid.html
I really, really hope Apple comes out with some cheaper desktop and laptop computers. It’s the one thing that’s missing.
